Uniquely American Flea Market

Bored with modern market such as Walmart and Harris Teeter, I decided now it's time to go shopping to a traditional market or flea market. Today was that big day. I went to a flea market located in Dallas, NC. It took about 45 minutes driving from Huntersville.

This market is only open on the weekend, Saturday and Sunday. That's why there was a lot of people crowding that place. I think every flea market in this world is the same. Either in U.S or in Indonesia, it sells everything. The most familiar things that we can find are cloths, vegetables and fruits, pets, jewelry, accessories, shoes, electric tools, kitchen sets, and food.

The atmosphere at flea markets is usually the same, but I can still find something interesting. Especially if I compare it with some of flea market in Indonesia. Here, I can say it's more comfortable. The parking lot is wide, the bathroom is clean and free, it provides an ATM inside, and some stands accept payments by card. I think this place is also secure. I saw a policeman riding his vehicle around the market to prohibit some crimes.

I like this market not only because the price is cheap but also I could see some new stuff. There are some vegetables and fruits that I've never seen before such as Chayote, Huazontle, Calabuza, Tomatillo, Yuca and so on. This world is so huge and I'm just now discovering it's diversity. Lord!

At this flea market there's so much traditional Mexican and Latino things. Probably half of the crowd was Mexican. No wonder some stands write down their prices and offers in Spanish. Some sellers even spoke Spanish to me, hahahhaa. Yes, I look Hispanic. That's not a secret. Actually I wish I could speak Spanish.

I didn't buy so many things from that market. I only bought some Mexican candies, some of the cute guavas, a bell pepper, a sunglass, and that's all. Yep, I tried a funnel cake. It was so good. what a crunchy, crispy, and sweet cake.

There were some unique scenery that probably I can't find in Indonesia. First was a superstitious tarot card booth. OMG. I wonder how much I need to pay the tarot reader. If it's not that expensive maybe next time I will try. Hahhaha..

The second one was at the pets and livestock location; I saw a pig in a cage. Yes, they sell pigs! Alive! I'm 100% sure this is something I will never ever find in an Indonesian flea market. The third one was a pony ride arena. Only five dollars and we can ride a pony for awhile. I've never ridden a horse in my whole life, next time I will.

Nevertheless, for me, Indonesian flea markets are still special. A consumer or a buyer could do a bargain for a product. That's a real market. Between a buyer and a seller they determine a price of the product by bargain process. There's a conversation, there will be a prolonged interaction. That's a human life. We are social, we can't live without others.
